James left Shetland at the age of 17, to work as a ships' carpenter. Apparently he jumped ship at Melbourne, Australia, and went to work in the gold fields for about 8 years. He returned to Shetland and married Grace, and then left Shetland again with a brother of his wife, leaving Grace behind. They went to New Zealand, where they bought a farm property. James built a house, and bought more land, before sending for Grace. Grace left Scotland on the ship "Victory" in 1865.
