Date: 23 NOV 1994 Place: Ashes scattered on Lake Whiratoa, Wanganui. Attended Mangapapa School, until Std. 6, obtained Proficiency Certificate, and had a further 4 years at night school. Played both cricket and rugby, however, an injury playing rugby curtailed that sport. Enjoyed cricket, and played for Celtic in Gisborne after leaving school. Played against a touring Aussie team, but was out for 11 runs. Worked in Adairs Men's dept. store for 3 years after leaving school. When he was 18 his parents moved to Wanganui, the next year he followed. He worked in a grocery store for 2 years, then decided to join the Fire brigade (temporary Ern thought), but remained for 43 years, rising through the ranks, moving back to Napier and Gisborne to gain experience and extra responsibilty. Finally retired in Gisborne as Chief Fire Officer. Enjoyed playing golf, was President of the Tawhero GC in Wag. in the 50's, also a member of the Park GC in Gisborne, was Patron of Tawhero GC at time of death. Until a few months before he died, he like to have a round of nine holes with his mates at the club, and was still winning the occasional prize. An active member of Royal Forest & Bird, Friends of Bushy Park, and until early Nov. '94 was still an area co-ordinator for Civil Defence. He held the office of Treasurer in the Wanganui CC, and helped occasionally in the organisation of the Wanganui Salon. The vicar for the service was Chris Timms, laterly from Hawera, who married Helen and Iain, the service was especially personal for the family. About 100 attended his funeral, including all his immediate family; Trevor, Graeme, Colin and Helen. Graeme had travelled 35 hours by air from Venezuela to be there. Trevor was accompanied by Sara Dickon, Graeme was on his own, Colin with Lucy, Helen with Iain. Both Emma and Margaret Anderson were there, as well as Ivan and Dianne Smith, Brian Smith, Renee Parkinson, Agnes Laird, Alison ??Smith Cara (Sharon's daughter), Bill Smith & Dimp (??), Stanley Laird, Alison & Bryce Gedye, The pall-bearers were Firemen, led by Gerald Smith, but also Graeme's daughter (from his first marriage) Sharon. | SMITH, Ernest Carlton (I4271)
