Olave Sinclair of Havera had been banished from Shetland by Earl Robert Stewart. Olave obtained on 19th September 1539, a respite of the slaughter of John, Earl of Caithness, who fell in the fight with the Orkney and Shetland men at Summersdale in Orkney in 1529. He subsequently held the office of Great Fowde of Zetland, and on 17th July 1762, having failed to account to the crown for the mails and rents of the islands, was ordered by the Privy Council to be put to the horn (be banished) if he does not do so within 20 days. He had a charter from Benedict, William and James Erlingson, sons of the late Erling Williamson, of their merks land in Burraland in Trondra for 54 Zetland gudlings (value unit for wares) in fat guidis dated at the Buyth in Dunrossness, 25th October 1567 and disponed to William Sinclair his brother's son the lands of Tegon and others by charter dated at Stirling 5th March 1578. On one occasion when Hutcheon Macleod of the Lewis invaded Shetland, Olave only managed to escape by leaping off Sumburgh Head and when he landed on a piece of grass in a cleft in a rock, he received no further injury than the loss of an eye. Olave entertained James Hepburn, the Earl of Bothwell, when he fled to Shetland in 1567, after the defeat of Queen Mary at Carberry Hill.

Francis Grant prints the following abstract, presumably of the same document (OSD, SN, 14 October 1893): 'Excambion between Olave Sinclair of Halvera, fowde of Zetland, and Guttorm Erasmusson of certain lands lying within the parish of the Archdeaconry of Zetland, dated 11th June, 1548'. | SINCLAIR, Olave (I36)

On the death certificates of the three Gutschlag boys they list their mother as Christina Vietzens or similar spelling. However after looking at the German records it appears her name was Justine Wilhelmina Vietzens. This was how she was listed on the four christening records I found and her second marriage to Gottfrieds brother.
Family stories tell us that Justine married her brother in law after Gottfried died in 1861. I found her remarriage to Carl August Gutschlag, son of Carl Gutschlag 13 May 1866. The record states that Justine is the widow of roof tiler/thatcher Gottf, Gutschlag. | VIETZENS, Justine Wilhelmina (I1593)

Robertson-James- Farmer "Chalgrove" Waianakarua. This old settler who has resided in the district for about forty years, was born in the Shetland Isles in 1827 (sic). He was brought up to country pursuits but went to sea at the age of seventeen, served an apprenticeship of four years, and was before the mast till 1852, when he left his ship in Melbourne. After about eighteen (? or 8?) years experience on the diggings, Mr Robertson arrived at Port Chalmers at the end of 1859, and at once settled in the Hampden district, where he bought a portion of his farm at the first land sale. He has 340 acres of freehold in a good state of cultivation.
From List of Ships Deserters: 1852-1900: p1546 notice posted 23.9.1858:James Robertson
"Matanzas" cook and steward, 5ft 8in high, swarthy complexion, dark hair, large mark on neck, hair lately shaved. 1 pound reward.
According to Neil Robertson, a grandson, James borrowed a suit of clothes from a passenger on the ship on which he was serving, and jumped ship in Melbourne.

James left Shetland at the age of 17, to work as a ship' s carpenter. Apparently he jumped ship at Melbourne, Australia, and went to work in the gold fields for about 8 years. He returned to Shetland and married Grace, and then left Shetland again with a brother of his wife, leaving Grace behind. They went to New Zealand, where they bought a farm property. James built a house, and bought more land, before sending for Grace. Grace left Scotland on the ship "Victory" in 1865. | ROBERTSON, James (I3556)
