From- :The Cyclopedia of NZ -Waianakarua-

Robertson-James- Farmer "Chalgrove" Waianakarua. This old settler who has resided in the district for about forty years, was born in the Shetland Isles in 1827 (sic). He was brought up to country pursuits but went to sea at the age of seventeen, served an apprenticeship of four years, and was before the mast till 1852, when he left his ship in Melbourne. After about eighteen (? or 8?) years experience on the diggings, Mr Robertson arrived at Port Chalmers at the end of 1859, and at once settled in the Hampden district, where he bought a portion of his farm at the first land sale. He has 340 acres of freehold in a good state of cultivation.

From List of Ships Deserters: 1852-1900: p1546 notice posted 23.9.1858:James Robertson

"Matanzas" cook and steward, 5ft 8in high, swarthy complexion, dark hair, large mark on neck, hair lately shaved. 1 pound reward.

According to Neil Robertson, a grandson, James borrowed a suit of clothes from a passenger on the ship on which he was serving, and jumped ship in Melbourne.

James left Shetland at the age of 17, to work as a ship' s carpenter. Apparently he jumped ship at Melbourne, Australia, and went to work in the gold fields for about 8 years. He returned to Shetland and married Grace, and then left Shetland again with a brother of his wife, leaving Grace behind. They went to New Zealand, where they bought a farm property. James built a house, and bought more land, before sending for Grace. Grace left Scotland on the ship "Victory" in 1865.
