----------------------------------------------------
According to an oral history of the family:
"John and his brothers, Robert and David, went to Gabriel's Gulley and struck gold. They sent the money home and their mother brought them all farms on the Taieri. John, being the oldest - or having the most gold, got the best farm on the Silverstream, but through drink and mismanagement lost it all. His mother lived to the age of 96."
This is all a little unlikely, as John was a leaseholder, not owner. The brothers may have gone to the gold rush and returned money to the family; that will be impossible to disprove or confirm.
BUT what we do know is that Robert Watt Brown, owned a lot of property concurrently.

Last known address was 31 Smith St., Riccarton, Christchurch. This is now Tyne St. This was the Rhodes family house, where Jessie was married to Henry Mauger Rhodes. We visited the address in 2006. Ray Stark in his notes mentions that the house had become a scaffolding contractor, which indeed it had. According to the owner at the time, when they remodelled the house they found various bottle hides - stashes of bottles in odd places.
With his 3rd son John born at Merryton, James could have possibly been working at the Merryton Colliery.

At the end of his life, a charity wrote to the NZ army trying to get hold of his relatives. The army responded, but their details were already 40 years old. The follwing reference found on the New South Wales BDM site, has Cogee on it. Coogee's main cemetery is Randwick Cemetery. William was last recorded by the charity as being at Randwick Hospital.
