Birth 1906/16920 - Mother is Ellen, No Father
Mary was born at East Taieri, Otago, New Zealand, on the 6 Aug 1906
She is recorded as leaving Wylies Crossing School to attend East Taieri School on the 7 Feb 1916 and then leaving school for Mosgiel on the 20 Sep 1918. She would have been 12
The Parent / Guardian is Mrs John Brown of "Silverside"
A later school record shows her leaving East Taieri School for Mosgiel school. Her birth given as 06 Aug 1908. John Brown Silverside as the Guardian/Parent.
A later school record shows Mary leaving Mosgiel School for "home" with the address of "Silverside" and Mr John Brown. This would be consistent as Mary's grandmother would have passed away by then. The last day of school is given as 22 Aug 1921. She would have been 15.
She may have been boarded with the grandparents to conclude her schooling as her mother married in 1919.
Given the inconsistent birth years, varying from 1906 to 1908, then Mary was at least 13 when she finished school, or perhaps as old as 15. If the BDM printout is accurate, then 15 yrs.
She is not present as being living on the mother's death certificate in 1954, but that could be for many reasons.
Given she was the age she was at school, then unlikely to have been given up for adoption.
No spinster women named BROWN or DABINETTE at Stirling for 1928-1935. Suggests she may not have moved when mother married.
Found BENNET connection. Marrying James W BENNET in 1925. Worth noting that Mary died young (aged 28) and her aunt J Brown, sent condolences from 'Silverside'. That would be Jeannie - Aunt of Mary.
Birth year matches age at death.

GUTSCHLAG - At Stratford Street, Gore, on Saturday, April 27, beloved husband of Louisa Gutschlag; aged 73 years. Gone home.
FUNERAL NOTICE
The friends of the late August Gutschlag are respectfully invited to attend his Funeral which will leave his late residence on TUESDAY April 30, at 2pm, for the Gore Cemetery.
J Williamson & Co Undertakers.
AND his obit
The death was reported on Sunday last of an old and highly respected resident of the district in the person of Mr August Gutschlag, inhis 74th year. Coming with his wife from Germany, deceased landed in Port Chalmers some 13 years ago and he first settled at Germantown, in the vicinity of Whiterig, where he acquired a small farm. This he worked until he went in retirement at Gore several years ago. he took little interest in Public life, but gained a reputation as a hardworking straight-forward honest settler. In later years deceased was actively associated with the Salvation Army, to which institution he gave years of valuable service, and his demise will be deeply regretted by a large circle of friends and relatives. He is survived by his widow and four of a family - two sons and two daughters - all of whom are married and resident in the district.
