The Athenaeum, a finishing school for young ladies, sponsored by the Episcopal Church, was founded in 1852 by Rev. Frank Gillette Smith of the Columbia Institute. The Smith family and their descendants lived in the building in the photograph which was known as "The Rectory" until 1973. The Rectory was built by Maury County's noted architect, Nathan Vaught, for Samuel Polk Walker, nephew of James K. Polk, though Samuel Polk Walker never lived in it because he moved to Washington, D.C. to be President Polk's personal secretary. The Athenaeum campus was located on the hill behind the Rectory. Columbia Athenaeum operated for 52 years until 1904.
