  Arrived in New Zealand 12 December 1848 on the Bernicia ---------------------------------------------------- According to an oral history of the family: "John and his brothers, Robert and David, went to Gabriel's Gulley and struck gold. They sent the money home and their mother brought them all farms on the Taieri. John, being the oldest - or having the most gold, got the best farm on the Silverstream, but through drink and mismanagement lost it all. His mother lived to the age of 96." This is all a little unlikely, as John was a leaseholder, not owner. The brothers may have gone to the gold rush and returned money to the family; that will be impossible to disprove or confirm. BUT what we do know is that Robert Watt Brown, owned a lot of property concurrently. ---------------------------------------------------- Intention to Marry certificate. Archives NZ Ref: BDM 20/16 1871 Dunedin p.581/71. Dated April 20: John BROWN, bachelor, a farmer aged 35 years, living at Dunedin, length of residence 1 week, intends to marry Mary GILLESPIE, a spinster aged 25 years living at Dunedin, length of residence 1 week, at the Office of the Registrar of Marriages, Dunedin.
