Notes |
- In writing a profile of his uncle Thomas Aitken, famed Border athlete, my grandfather JAA in the Border Magazine" in October 1923 wrote:
"Tom Aitken was the third son of the late Alexander G Aitken for many years grieve at Caberston and latterly at Glen Lodge. He inherited his physical prowess from both sides of the house. His maternal grandfather, Walter Stark, was a giant of a man and of prodigious strength.
In the auld farrant tonw of Carnwath in the upper ward of Lanarkshire there is a steep outside stair leading to the town house. legend has it that Walter Stark used to carry "a lade o' meal" unaided up these stairs, and many other stories are current there of his remarkable feats of strength; feats that verge on the incredible."
