Like his siblings, he also attended Christchurch West School, starting in 1931.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gilbert was a Coachbuilder by trade and lived almost his entire life at Halswell, a suburb of Christchurch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1950, Gilbert married Una McTeigue and the union created 4 children. As most of them are living, I will not document their names here.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"530\" height=\"656\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stark.gen.nz\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Una-Rhodes.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3787\" style=\"width:530px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stark.gen.nz\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Una-Rhodes.jpg 530w, https:\/\/www.stark.gen.nz\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Una-Rhodes-242x300.jpg 242w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 530px) 100vw, 530px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Una passed away a frew years earlier than Gilbert in 2011 and her remains are interred at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/cemetery\/2540987\/st.-mary's-anglican-church-cemetery\">St. Mary&#8217;s Anglican Church Cemetery<\/a> at Halswell, Christchurch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gilbert passed away on the 7 Mar 2015 at\u00a0Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand and his remains are interred alongside Una&#8217;s.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stark.gen.nz\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Gilbert-Rhodes-grave.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3791\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stark.gen.nz\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Gilbert-Rhodes-grave.jpeg 640w, https:\/\/www.stark.gen.nz\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Gilbert-Rhodes-grave-300x225.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo Ngaire Wright<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gilbert\u00a0was born on the 22 May 1926 at\u00a0Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand.
