John Henry Pollock

JH Pollock from Digital NZ Archive

John was born in Dunedin in 1850. He was Janet’s second son and the first Brown to be born in New Zealand. His father was one of Dunedin’s butchers, so John would have had a mix of education and work to support the family. At some point, he moved to Whanganui and carried on his trade. His father moved to Whanganui at some point too, before dying in 1880.

In 1879 he married Jemima Potto in Wellington, who was herself from a rather famous family. More can be seen here at the following Link

The couple would start a family soon after with the first 2 children born in Whanganui and the third born in Wellington. He kept up his butchering trade to support the family. John would pass away in 1918 and Mimi in 1920, both in Wellington. There is no grave stone.

This obituary omits another part of his life which was promoting the meat trade. There are numerous photos of him supporting that.
