Norman was the 4th child of James and Christina and the 2nd son. He was born on the 4 May 1901 at Balfour, Southland. He attended Mataura School initially and then Balfour School.
As early as 1916, Norman is seen working for the Railways as a Messenger Boy.
He was also a keen golfer and in 1938 won a club tournament at Wyndham.
In 1923, he married Jane Telfer. From their union, stemmed one child – Iris. Iris’ father also worked at the Edendale Railway station.

40 years on the Railways, ending his time as station master at Edendale in Southland, NZ.
On the 3 Jan 1956, Norman passed away at Wyndham, Southland, New Zealand. His wife Jane survived him by 7 years and passed away in 1963 at Invercargill.
