Enoch was the first born of Martha and David and was christened on the 26 Jul 1846 in Ashford on the Water, Derbyshire, England.
There is only one publicly available record for Enoch before he left for New Zealand in 1856 and that is the 1851 Census, where at age 4, he is noted as being a “scholar”.

Enoch appeared in New Zealand records in 1873, in a article where he found a mast of ship washed up at New Brighton beach.
The next appearance of Enoch, is in the 1875/6 election, where he is seen as residing at New Brighton, while owning a 6 acre section at Papanui (Christchurch). At this time he married Sarah Jane TRIVETT, who had arrived with her parents and sister on the ship ‘Metropolis’ in 1863. The marriage happened at St Lukes Church in Christchurch.

Enoch formed a business relationship with his farmer around the driving of coaches from New Brighton to the centre of Christchurch and that was contract terminated in 1887 with announcements in various newspapers of the time.

In December 1890, Enoch cleared the stock and farm related equipment from his New Brighton property.
Between 1891 and 1892, Enoch, his wife and 5 children, moved to Springston and started farming. The farm would end up being 56 acres (about 22 hectares) and was located on Days Road, not far from sale yards and the railway.
The children attended a number of schools in the city, but after moving to Springston, they attended Springston School and when Springston South School was opened, some of the children were first day pupils at that school.
Sarah Jane passed in 1915 aged only 53. She, like her husband, is buried in Springston Cemetery.
Enoch died in 5 Jul 1920 at home in Springston and is buried in the Springston Cemetery.
Springston Cemetery, Canterbury.
In 1922, two of Enoch’s daughters, namely Frances and Mabel, made a claim against Enoch’s estate in the High Court. The court only agreed that Mabel should be paid a lump sum from the estate, 150 pounds. It is sad that the two women had to fight a court battle and the effect of Enoch’s will was to leave most of the estate to his grandchildren instead, rather than the children.
A house belonging to Enoch’s estate was sold in 1923. This house was on the corner of Mary and Frank Streets in Papanui, Christchurch.
