Barney was born at Balfour on 28 Feb 1897. He was the first born to James and Christina.
He was admitted to Balfour School, Southland, New Zealand, on 20 Jan 1908 (register number, 415. Milton reached Std VI level).
He left Balfour School on 11 Dec 1911 having come from Mataura School, Southland, New Zealand.
He then engaged as Cadet in the Railways at Christchurch
Travel to England
An article appears in the newspapers of the day that sheds some light on how a young man made it all way to England and the joined WWI.

Traveled to England in 1915 and enlisted with the Liverpool Regiment and was wounded later in the year. He was then sent to Victoria Hospital in England to recover and a further 2 hospitals after that.
After the war, visited the USA on the way home and traveled to Adelaide where he died of Tuberculosis in Adelaide Consumptive Hospital.
