Grace was born on the 8 Feb 1866, Waianakarua, Otago. The second child of Grace and James Robertson and the first New Zealand born Robertson, with her older sister born in Shetland. Grace attended Hampden School and left that school when she was 15 to help on her father’s farm.
On the 1st October 1891 she married Thomas Young at Otepopo and moved to Kurow where she had 3 children and in 1900, moved back to Waianakarua and had 2 more children.

Her husband, Thomas, died in 7 May 1915 leaving her with 3 school-aged children. Thomas was a farmer at Hampden and Grace inherited the farm following his death.
She passed away on 13 May 1947 and is buried at Hampden Cemetery.
