August Florance was born on the 30 March 1878 at Christchurch, New Zealand. He was the third child and first male child born to Elizabeth and Augustus and in his youth, attended Christchurch Normal School.
On the 26 December 1907 he married Edith Louise Ireland at Christchurch. The union produced 8 children as outlined in the following.
